What is GHGP Land Sector and Removals Guidance?

The Land Sector and Removals Guidance has been developed by GHGP as a new tool to clarify, quantify, and report GHG emissions and removals from land use, land use change, biogenic products, and carbon dioxide removal technologies in GHG inventories. The Guidance, equipped with more consistent and transparent criteria, is based on principles from the

The Guidance’s concept is constructed from existing approaches, including the IPCC guidelines for national GHG inventories, GHG Protocol Agricultural Guidance and LULUCF Guidance for Project Accounting, and ISO 14064-1:2018. Additionally, the Guidance informs corporates about mitigation strategies as well as serves as the basis for the Science-Based Target Initiative. Corporates can apply the guidance to:

LSR - Objectives

The Land Sector and Removals Guidance was conceived in 2020 and since then the development process has continued with the complete 

 being published in Q3 2021. The process has reached the pilot testing stage and the complete 

was recently published. The draft Guidance 2 will be applied by the Pilot Testing Group and reviewed by the Review Group, in parallel. The pilot testing phase will last four months, while the review phase will lasting two. Following these phases, the Guidance will be finalised in consultation with the Advisory Committee and Technical Working Group; the final Guidance is expected to be published in 2023.

How can the Guidance support the biomethane certificate/GO market?

The Guidance covers reporting purchases or sales of certificates from bioenergy, which is addressed in draft 1 under the “bioenergy and other biogenic products”. The Reporting criteria include the following points:

Reporting emissions and removals across scopes (i.e., scopes 1, 2 and 3)

Separate or combined reporting of fossil versus biogenic carbon

Whether and how to report avoided emissions

How to report purchases or sales of credits/certificates

Once the Guidance is in place, precise reporting methodology and criteria for green gas GO consumption would significantly benefit corporates using biomethane via the purchase of biomethane GOs. This is bullish for biomethane GO demand.

In addition, the recently launched draft 2 for the pilot testing and review process explicitly addresses biomethane. We will have a closer look at how biomethane is affected and what impact the draft Guidance could bring to the biomethane certificate market in the next article.
